With four Weeks off fishing thanks to shattered bones in his hand Jules has had plenty of time to reflect.
I’m not one for health and wealth resolutions, but every New Year I have a hard look at the previous 12 months. It’s an honesty exercise: what did and didn’t work, what needs to be changed, and how I might improve things?
Big and round – Ground bait and my trademark mush proved great for one-off trips to action waters and perfect for the very cold late winter sorties, but without a doubt sticking to boilies only made a big difference when I twigged it early summer. Nuisance fish issues fell away, the average size of my carp increased, and in all honesty feeding boilies is a lot easier than mixing mush. Initially I used the Key in 15mm and dumbbells, but by late summer I had moved on to 20mm boilies only. It was definitely a big-fish-friendly tactic and fishing a slightly smaller hook bait kept tripping the carp up.
