I’ve got an unusual report to start this week, the kind I love to receive. It’s come in from lure angler Chris Millward. Chris is a pretty hot lure angler, travelling up and down the UK looking for prime spots into which to cast his wrigglers, and last week travelled to a free stretch of the River Weaver in Cheshire, in the hope of some toothy critter action. Team Predator angler Chris was flicking out a 0.8g jighead, in what he described as a tight swim, with a tiny vibro-worm mounted. He used his ultra-flexible 0.5-7g lure rod to good effect, when his lure was smashed by a fish which put a proper curve in his light gear. After an arm aching battle, his 5lb flouro leader held firm, and Chris was delighted to bring a new personal best to the net in the shape of a 17lb 1oz common carp! It’s a super result for Chris, and one I couldn’t be more pleased about after losing a carp on a lure myself the week before from a different venue.
A group of anglers booked North Cave, East Yorkshire venue Five Acre Lake out for a 48-hour social and while the fishing was proving tricky, a few anglers did manage to catch. Steve Warren landed a 15lb 2oz carp on Saturday morning after losing one earlier. Steve caught on a 20mm Sticky Manilla boilie using a size 6 curved shank hook tied to a 12lb fluorocarbon hooklink. Lee Hall had a 13lb 6oz mirror during the night and caught his fish on a single Bait-Tech Polony boilie. Steve Partridge fared well with a 14lb 6oz mirror caught on Saturday afternoon, then after midnight on Sunday he landed a fish called Von at 23lb 2oz which became the new lake record. Steve caught his on 14mm Marukyu Seaweed Formula pop-up fished on a Multi rig using a size 8 Prologic XC4. This was fished over a large bed of mixed pellets coated with Sticky Cloudy Krill liquid. Around the venues If I told you in Staffordshire there is a fishery with pools within which the average carp is currently over 30lb, you’d be interested, wouldn’t you? What if I told you it’s not a syndicate or a club venue, but is available for all to fish on a day-ticket basis? Still interested? Then check out Baden hall Fishery, where the Quarry is starting to wake up and big fish are on the move.
