Just like the past couple of winters I decided to spend my time on a quiet little lake in Berkshire called Tippings Lane which is situated just to the east of Reading near the village of Sonning.
The lake itself is 16 acres, has a stock of around 150 carp and an average depth of three feet – the perfect venue to target during the colder periods.
It was way back in October when I first started to fish the lake, but after 12 nights angling between then and the new year all I had to show for my efforts was just one carp. During that period I found most of the fish grouped up in areas of the lake I just couldn’t gain access to, so I found myself fishing to the entrances of these tiny bays in the hope of picking one offas they moved out; that’s if they ever did, of course. My last session of 2016 fell between Christmas and the New Year, which was the week that the lake eventually froze solid and my fishing came to an abrupt end. With most of January also written off because of this it wasn’t until Storm Doris rolled in that everything eventually began to kick off again – and kick off it did!

Around the venues If I told you in Staffordshire there is a fishery with pools within which the average carp is currently over 30lb, you’d be interested, wouldn’t you? What if I told you it’s not a syndicate or a club venue, but is available for all to fish on a day-ticket basis? Still interested? Then check out Baden hall Fishery, where the Quarry is starting to wake up and big fish are on the move.
