2000-09 What to Buy: Honda S2000
Overseen by Honda chief engineer Shigeru Uehara (the father of the original Acura NSX and the Integra Type R, two cars that embodied Japanese performance in the '90s), the Honda S2000 is a two-seat roadster we described as "the car of your dreams."
Maturity Is Overrated
Highs: Quicker to 60 mph than the manual, active safety tech included, lots of drive modes. Lows: Carries extra pounds, a CVT just isn’t as fun as a stick, luxury price without all the luxury niceties.
EV, Straight Up
Highs: 253-mile EPA range, practical interior, free of silly EV gimmicks. Lows: All work and no gimmicks makes it a dull boy, not so lively off the line, Chevy Bolt EUV costs less.
AN ODD CHOICE TO COMMEMORATE 50 YEARS OF M
If you had a performance division with 50 years of glorious history, would you celebrate it by introducing a plug-in-hybrid SUV?
Seamlessly Electric
The i7 smoothly integrates an EV powertrain into the new 7-series megasedan.
THE REBELLION ADVANCES
For over a decade, the Power Wagon has served as Ram's burly off-road king. But it doesn't offer Cummins power, and customers clamored for a stonking diesel off-roader with more towing capacity.
Getting Warmer
A prototype drive of the high-performance Integra suggests it could be a nice foil for the raucous Civic Type R.
Track Tractor
An SUV for the track sounds as ridiculous as a supercar optimized for off-roading. And yet, Lamborghini says that around a typical racetrack, its new Urus Performante is quicker than the original 2015 Huracán.
E-tron and On
Highs: Conventionally handsome exterior, upscale and userfriendly interior, largely free of EV weirdness. Lows: Mechanically identical to its Volkswagen sibling, ho-hum highway range, not as speedy as some rivals.
2023 FORD F-150 RAPTOR R: Trucks of Fury
Highs: 700 horsepower, monster-truck presence, surprisingly graceful on-road manners. Lows: Not 703 horsepower, can't lock the rear diff in two-wheel drive, it costs how much?
2022 Winners and Losers
Our look back at the peaks and valleys of the past year's automotive news. There are more valleys than peaks because, well, it was that kind of year. Again.

From Homely Hybrid to Hello, Hot Stuff
Blinded by fuel economy, we settled for an ugly Prius for too long.
Comfortably Numb
Highs: Roomy interior, comfortable and quiet around town. Lows: Lazy acceleration, polarizing looks, pales next to more exciting competition.
ROUGH-CUT WOOD
Highs: Perky hybrid powertrain, hushed cabin, it's finally new. Lows: Unwieldy handling, lengthy braking distance, poorly packaged third row.
Shaping Up
Hyundai's latest EV throws a curve.
High M-tensity
BMW's M4 CSL is the ultimate M car, and it’s not for the faint of heart.
BRINGING CONTRAST BACK TO THE LUXURY SEGMENT
Highs: So quiet, so smooth, so big. Lows: So expensive, so much like an S-class.
Answered Prayer
Highs: Greater driver engagement, nearly as quick as the automatic, no additional cost. Lows: Not offered with the base four-cylinder, EPA fuel economy takes a hit.
The World's Heaviest Minivan (Also, Its Fanciest)
To suggest that Jeep's seven- or eight-passenger Wagoneer L/ Grand Wagoneer L twins are elephantine is to libel pachyderms. Both vehicles boast seven newfound inches of wheelbase and 12.0 bonus inches overall, compared with what we now quite inadvisably call their short-wheelbase kinsfolk. We are here to make you smile.
