On this birthday month of Dr. Smt.&nbsp;Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra, we express our gratitude to her for providing continuous guidance on all aspects of life. This is also the month of Diwali, the festival of lights. Another festival that also occurs during this time is 'Tulsi Vivaah'. Those who celebrate it, bring home the Tulsi plant (Ocimum sanctum) for 4-5 days. The plant is a natural air purifier and keeps insects away. This was famously documented by Sir George Birdwoode in a Times article dated 29th April 1904 about how the planting of Tulsi (Ocimum viride) remedied the mosquito infestation on the land meant for the construction of Victoria Gardens and the Albert Museum, when workers previously suffered from fever due to malaria (unknown at that time).
There are also other uses of Tulsi. The smell of its dry leaves helps cure a runny nose.&nbsp;However, it is the fresh leaves that have medicinal properties as there is no mention of dry Tulsi leaves or its powder in Ayurveda.&nbsp;Regular Tulsi leaves are bitter, hot in potency and help mitigate Kapha, Vayu, swelling, worm infection, vomiting, fever and lethargy. Leaves of black and white variants of Tulsi cause Pitta and burning sensation. Here is a short recipe using Tulsi for mitigating Vata and Kapha: Blend 4-5 leaves of Tulsi and 1/2" piece of ginger in 1/4 cup of water. Sieve, add 1 teaspoon honey, mix and use.
The below recipe of Tulsi leaf extract mentioned in Aaryabhishek is ideal to enjoy the health benefits of Tulsi.
Ingredients:

&bull; 1/2 litre water
Method: 
1. Boil water.
2. Add leaves in a pot and continue boiling until water quantity is halved (10 minutes).
3. Sieve the liquid and use (makes one cup).&nbsp;Keep sipping during the day.
