Kitchen composting technology has advanced to the point where food waste can be transformed into compost overnight.
"Every year, 10 million tons of food waste in South Africa gets thrown away, and organic waste (food) goes to landfill, resulting in one of the leading causes of greenhouse emissions globally," says Kerry Engelen, owner of Microgarden, a supplier of the Electric Kitchen Composter.
"The problem with throwing organic waste into the bin is that when it gets to landfill it doesn't break down because of the lack of oxygen in landfills," Engelen explains..
Engelen believes that the composter sold by Microgarden "is the smart alternative to dealing with food waste". One push of a button is all it takes," she says.
