TO CREATE, an artist needs a muse. And for Kim Jones, he chose renowned British stylist Ray Petri’s Buffalo styling to be the inspiration for his latest Dior Men spring collection.
Pioneered during the 1980s, Buffalo became a counterculture style that revolutionised streetwear fashion. It also quickly became a popular trend among rebellious and expressive youths in the UK. The term Buffalo was created by Petri himself, in reference to Bob Marley’s song titled Buffalo Soldier.
It appropriates both high and low culture, while also infusing an amalgamation of styles from various cultures across America and the UK.
Because Buffalo blended a variation of elements, it formulated a new kind of fashion that was fresh, unique and personal compared to the conventional styles back in the day.
It also became a notion of self-expression, and it changed the way people dressed. Even four decades after its inception, the spirit of Buffalo still has its influences in modern street style.
Like Buffalo, Kim Jones has pushed and set new boundaries in modern fashion in his own way. In the last five years as artistic director for Dior Men, Jones explored many horizons with the brand and solidified Dior’s global influence in luxury fashion.
