COME SUMMER IN JAPAN, most locals escape to Hokkaido to cool off in temperatures averaging 20 deg C – ideal for exploring flower fields or hiking in the mountains. My trip was enhanced by Club Med Tomamu and the newly opened Club Med Kiroro Grand, where I got to soak up Hokkaido’s kaleidoscope of colours and enjoy an elevated mountain vacation as part of Club Med’s signature premium all-inclusive programme.
With the majestic 145-hectare expanse of Tomamu Mountain providing a backdrop, the famous snowy scenery is now all lush greenery and rolling hills. A cable car ride just behind the hotel takes you to the ethereal Unkai Terrace, or Sea of Clouds, at 1,088 metres, where clouds hug the mountains in a gentle embrace. For those with a sweet tooth, an unkai-themed café dishes out cloud-shaped marshmallows with your coffee and ice cream.
Horseback riding and mountain biking excursions are available for guests seeking an invigorating outdoor experience. During these tours, guests will catch glimpses of grazing sheep and cattle on local farms while traversing stunning forested landscapes.
Guests can also enjoy a truly restorative experience at the open-air onsen adjacent to Mina-Mina Beach. Immerse yourself in the heated waters while surrounded by the tranquillity of the forests.
