BRITAIN could sizzle in a 35C scorcher as a North African heat plume sweeps right across Europe this week.
Temperatures will rocket to record-breaking levels by Saturday if hot air starts blowing over from baking France and Spain, forecasters have warned.
It comes after almost a month's worth of rain fell in parts of the UK yesterday.
Jim Dale, of British Weather Services, said: "We're looking at a big heat plume in virtually every continent.
"North Africa and the Middle East are almost certain to see 50C and by the end of the week it may touch south-east England.
"So we could see 35C around there - but it wouldn't take much to push it further north."
How badly the heat spike affects the UK depends on the speed and direction of the wind. Jim&nbsp;said the week will be pleasant "until the weekend, and that's when we start to look to the south east and see whether this plume comes our way."
The meteorologist said Britain faces a fiery summer that could break the 40C threshold by August.
Around 1.3million Brits already face a hosepipe ban in south-east England, with other areas expected to follow suit.
