THE codebreaking genius known as the father of AI is coming back from the dead – with the help of his own technology. Alan Turing, inset, will be resurrected as a life-size avatar at his World War Two codebreaking base. He slaved away to help break the Nazi’s Enigma code at Bletchley Park, Bucks. And the Turing Test he later developed is still used in developing AI, to test if a computer thinks like a human. Rebecca Foy, of Bletchley Park, said: “Even without his wartime work, he would be famous for his pioneering computing work.” Turing’s recordings and records will be pumped into the “AI Alan”, which will appear on screen and answer questions from visitors in real time. The creation, backed by the Turing family, should be ready early next year. Turing’s nephew Sir Dermot Turing said: “Lots of people come to Bletchley Park to get a bit closer to Alan and this will be a fun way to do that.” Turing, who was persecuted for being gay, died of cyanide poisoning in 1954, at the age of 41, in what a coroner ruled to have been a suicide.
