FROZEN food sales are on the up as hard-up shoppers cut back on waste.
Supermarkets shifted an extra 7.6million tonnes of frozen fare in the three months to June compared to the same time last year.
It comes as families swap perishable groceries, such as fruit and veg, for the freezer aisle.
Food industry analyst Julian Wild, of Rollits, said: "Shoppers don't want to be throwing away&nbsp;out-of-date products and frozen clearly reduces waste."
The value of retail frozen food sales surged by &pound;326.5m - a yearon-year jump of 20% - said the British Frozen Food Federation.
Customers are filling trollies with low-cost frozen products, such as veg, meat, chips and pizza, while snubbing pricier items like ice cream, desserts and fish.
The BFFF says UK households&nbsp;throw away 4.5m tonnes of food a year, with up to 50% of fresh produce ending up in the bin.
Its research found the main reason was people leaving it in the fridge for too long.
BFFF chief executive Rupert Ashby said: "The cost-of-living crisis continues to have a significant effect on spending habits."
He said an average family could save around &pound;720 a year being less wasteful with food.
