BOFFINS plan to build a 200,000-mile stairway to heaven so robots can ferry goods to the Moon.
They hope to send a line from the ground up into Earth's orbit, held taut by gravity. A similar "elevator" into space from the Moon will let bots fire goods between the two.
Tech news website Freethink said the move would make space more affordable to scientists, start-ups and tourists.
Physicist Bradley Edwards, who researched the idea for Nasa, said it would by JERRY LAWTON cost &pound;8billion and take 15 years to build but could slash the cost of sending a payload into orbit to just &pound;80 per 11b - down from &pound;60,000 by rocket in the 60s.
He said: "Once you reduce the cost to a Fed-Ex kind of level it opens the doors to lots of people, lots of countries, and lots of companies to get involved in space."
Boffins say synthetic fibres or carbon nanotubes may be strong enough for the line.
