Visiting the bog has been a galactic-sized problem since the first American in space, Alan Shepard, was told to “do it in the suit” on the launchpad in 1961.

He did – and promptly short-circuited his electronic biosensors.

Boffins have been battling to perfect zero-gravity toilets ever since.
