RAPPERS like Kendrick Lamar are better wordsmiths than any other musicians from the past century, says Stephen Fry.
Fry, 65, crowned Lamar, 36, and his peers from the hip-hop world as the best lyricists most of us have seen in our lifetimes.
He said they were the greatest with words since American singer Cole Porter, who achieved huge success in the 1920s and 1930s with songs that often featured on Broadway.
Speaking to This Cultural Life podcast, Fry said: "I'm aware that someone of my age and background even mentioning his name is absurd, but Kendrick Lamar and some of the hiphop artists understand language.
"They use language in a way that is more delightful, more filled with texture, complexity, patterning and real sort of joy than has been used in popular music for many [years].
"I know I'm not alone.
"Language is the gift of us all and is under-celebrated." In the world of hip-hop, Lamar is often placed alongside the likes of Eminem, Tupac and Nas as among the greatest ever.
