The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee voted to increase the base rate for the 12th time in a row&nbsp;to 4.5% from 4.25%, inflicting misery upon millions.
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt admitted the increase will be "very disappointing for families with mortgages".
But he insisted the Government needs to stick to its&nbsp;plan to halve inflation by the end of the year.
The Bank said inflation is expected to fall more slowly than previously thought. Lib Dem Sarah Olney called it a "hammer blow for families".
