DRIVERS hoping to make a quick summer holiday getaway face getting snarled up in more than 220 miles of "nightmare" motorway roadworks.National Highways is installing more than 130 emergency areas on smart motorways, leaving vast stretches subject to 50mph average speed checks.Works are taking place on the M1, M3, M4, M5, M6, M20, M25 and M27. On the Ml alone, a 10-mile stretch near Leeds will be affected between junctions 43 and 47.The works are part of a £390million programme to address the lack of stopping places on smart motorways, which do not have a hard shoulder.AA president Edmund King said: "It's a nightmare for drivers. Of course we support putting in new emergency areas. But we did argue that they shouldn't open without the adequate number of areas anyway." Drivers are being urged to give themselves plenty of extra travel time.Duncan Smith, executive director of operations at National Highways, said: "These improvements will help keep more road users safer."
