Nikki Allan's family never gave up their fight for justice after the youngster was lured to her death in a derelict warehouse 300 yards from their home.
After a trial at Newcastle Crown Court, neighbour David Boyd, 55, was found guilty of murdering Nikki in 1992.
The little girl had been attacked with a brick and stabbed 37 times in the chest.
Boyd then dumped her - dead or dying - in the basement of the building in Sunderland's East End.
Cries of "yes" and "you b*****d" were heard in the court's public gallery as the verdict was announced.
Nikki's sister Stacey Allan shouted "yes, thank you" as she left court.
Northumbria Police first prosecuted the wrong George Heron, man, who was cleared after a trial in 1993.
Boyd, who was 25 at the time of the killing, and is now from Stockton, Teesside, will be sentenced on May 23.
