POTATO vodka is making a comeback in Britain.
Marks &amp; Spencer is using up Jersey Royal spuds that are too big to sell as salad potatoes to create the &pound;30-a-bottle booze.
Vodka can be made from any crop containing sugar or starch but is most often distilled from grain. Now 14,000 bottles of the spud-based drink are winging their way to the store's shelves in time for Christmas.
The store claims it is "probably the finest quality vodka on any supermarket shelf".
Jenny Rea, lead product developer for spirits and liqueurs at M&amp;S, added: "Working to create the best range of own-label spirits out there on supermarket shelves has been a real labour of love." The chain takes its crop of Jersey Royals from the Channel Islands that are longer than two inches and boils them until they are broken down into sugars.
Yeast is added and the mix distilled in copper stills before it is watered down to 42% alcohol.
It is then bottled by Royal Mash.
M&amp;S says the production of the vodka has stopped 3,000 tons of potatoes from being wasted.&nbsp;
