TEENAGE girls were worst hit by Covid lockdowns. Researchers studied whether personal memories predicted a decline in the mental health of eight to 16-year-olds during the pandemic. Participants were assessed three times while Covid raged. They were asked to write about their personal memory from the first lockdown and to assess their psychological well-being and depressive symptoms. The “unprecedented” research by US and Danish universities shows the mental health of adolescent girls fared the worst. Dr Tiril Fjellhaugen Hjuler, of Aarhus University, said: “We found children’s and adolescents’ mental health decreased over time, and that adolescent females fared the worst.” The findings are published in the journal Child Development.
