CALLS by the King’s space adviser to send robots into orbit instead of humans have been rejected by Nasa’s top medic. Lord Martin Rees, the UK’s Astronomer Royal, reckons robots are better equipped than humans to explore space because they do not have physical or mental health concerns. But Dr James “JD” Polk, of Nasa, argues humans are “vastly more efficient”. He reckons they’re much more adaptable than robotic rovers and probes. Dr Polk is acting as an advisor to the UK Space Agency before the first all-British space mission. It will see four UK astronauts blasted to the International Space Station by private firm Axiom Space. Lord Rees, 82, who has held the post since 1995, says sending people into orbit can affect a person’s health and described it as “hugely risky”. He said there is “no practical scientific benefit” in sending humans on space missions. Although he agrees sending humans to worlds may have “symbolic” value, he believes this should be led by private space companies like SpaceX. The last Brit to go into orbit was Tim Peake in 2015.
