BRITAIN needs to boost its investment in the hunt for aliens in outer space.
The UK is currently fourth behind Germany, France and Italy in how much it pays into the European Space Agency.
But its director-general says we need to cough up more to send astronauts into space on exploration missions to help Europeans set foot on the moon.&nbsp;Josef Aschbacher praised the UK as a "very strong and happy member" of the body and said Britain played a key role in developing satellites and using the data they beam back.
He said Britain had "a lot to offer" in helping astronauts reach planned new space stations and ultimately the moon. The UK was "lucky", he said, as there were three Brits - more than any other nationality - named in the new 12-strong astronaut corps in November.
Britain committed &pound;1.6billion to the ESA, or &pound;320million a year, last November.
Germany paid &pound;3bn, France&nbsp;paid &pound;2.74bn and Italy invested &pound;2.64bn.
A Government spokesman said the increased investment "involves human and robotic missions to explore Mars, around and on the surface of the moon with the Lunar Gateway space station and the Argonaut programme, as well as on the International Space Station"
