STAGE 1 PHOTO SHOOT
In a dark room, I set a single light above the subject’s head. I took photos with the eyes open and closed. I chose closed eyes to show a more thoughtful moment.
STAGE 2 EDITING THE PHOTO

STAGE 3 ESTABLISHING VALUES
I begin a piece with a small area of black to judge my values as I work. This lets me compare future values to the black and white I’ve already established.
STAGE 4 BEGINNING SKIN TONE
I create my skin tone with light layers of beige sienna and seashell pink, which I mix with splotches of yellow, lavender and pink. Notice the pattern on the forehead.
