The Raneleigh Flyer

Shaun: This car is registered as a 1969 Stanbury TT. I understand from the previous owners that it was one of seven factory-built prototypes, though I can’t verify that. In fact, I don’t know any of its history, other than what I went through to buy it five years ago.

I must confess that it was an eBay purchase. I had seen this car listed on there and fell in love with the looks right away. There were no bids on it, so I figured in my mind it might go for something like £3000 or £4000 and I decided that I would have it.

Unfortunately, that optimistic estimate was blown out of the water. It went beyond my ceiling, then it smashed through the £10,000 barrier and finally ended up selling for just over £12,000. There were 12 individuals bidding on it, which explains why it went so high. Whether that was 12 independent bidders or 11 brothers of the seller and one other, I really don’t know! Either way, it was well beyond my budget and so I had to put it out of my mind.

Then, a month later, wouldn’t you know it – the car was back on eBay. It was being sold by a different guy, so I got in touch, explained that I’d been interested in bidding for this car last time around and asked why he had put it back up for sale. He was perfectly upfront and said that he bought up cars which had generated a lot of interest, gave them a once-over and then stuck them straight back online for a few hundred quid extra.
