In 1990, Sir Trevor McDonald received a phone call that would lead to one of the most memorable assignments of his career.
Nelson Mandela was due to be released after spending 27 years in prison, and McDonald was one of the few, privileged journalists invited to South Africa to interview the globally recognised antiapartheid campaigner.
This week, McDonald returns to South Africa to reflect on his encounter and assess the great man’s legacy. We caught up with the 78-year-old presenter to find out more about the experience…
