September is known as the Harvest Month with the amazing Harvest moons that we get and the end of our hectic harvest which should be safely in the barn. The moon makes a spectacular display during the month. It appears as very oversized and a beautiful red colour.
It is also a month of abundance for British produce. All the summer crops are still bearing fruit as well as the early Autumn fruits and vegetables coming into season. It is hard to choose what to harvest next.
September is such a beautiful month both for weather and for the colours of the changing leaves.
The Anglo Saxon name for September was Barley Month as this was when they harvested their Barley. Today we do it much earlier, in July, especially the Malting Barley. We sell our Barley to Simpsons Malt, who then malt it, for Tottenham Hotspurs Micro brewery and Adnams
Figs are wonderful at this time of the year and they look like they will have a good yield this year. I gave my husband a pizza oven during lock down which we love so any new recipes I find that combine both are truly wonderful.
