The idea for the Shetland Pony Grand National is down to Raymond BrooksWard, 40 years ago. He had the foresight - but quite how he came up with the idea of racing Shetlands, nobody will ever know as unfortunately Raymond is no longer with us. In those days, there wasn't pony racing or anything to get into racing, but it's created 32 professional jockeys, who have won more than 7,000 races between them.
We went to Aachen last year, which was amazing. The kids got a standing ovation and, apparently, the last time anybody got a standing ovation was Ludger Beerbaum when he jumped double clear in the Nations Cup.
At Burghley, they said when we went: "I thought we'd get two or three people watching and we had about 2,500!" That sums it up. It's the unique factor; who'd have thought you could race Shetlands?
