The deadly virus and the fear of contacting it has managed to do what no being on earth has been capable of – making humans sit at home, for an indeú nite period of time across the globe. Who could have thought of that possibility? But humans are resilient beings, we adapt and adopt as per the situation, some of us never ever giving up. In the hour of social distancing, we have to embrace the ongoing state of affairs, and created several measures, some of them harsh to not only survive, but blossom. This is the new normal.

Since March 2020, India has been fighting Covid-19 tooth and nail. From lockdowns to lock opens, we have tried everything, but the virus is in no hurry to leave it seems. Even after a year, human beings across the world continue to battle it! Industries and businesses have again come to a grinding halt and there are crores-worth of losses taking place. As one celebrity has succinctly said – ‘When there is life, there is hope’. Without life, hope does not stand a chance.

On cue, we present the status of the skin care business in the time of the pandemic. Research and Markets released their India Skin Care Market Report 2021 where they have revealed that the skin care market size is expected to reach a value of Rs 191.09 billion by 2025. Rise in the incidence of skin diseases thanks to the ongoing pandemic and improved awareness regarding skin health among people are a few of the significant factors that are propelling market growth. Stakeholders in the business of skin care such as brands, dermatologists and salons share their views and goals for the year ahead. Every day is a great day to celebrate the amazing women in your life, but International Women’s Day gives you an extra reason to do just that. Celebrated every year on 8th March, the day encourages all people to actively choose to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness about women’s equality, lobby for accelerated gender parity and fundraise for womenfocusedcharities. In Hair, we meet Alfonso Martinez who has hairdressing in his blood. Martinez had a tough and demanding mentor in the form of his father, but through persistence and passion he wasable to overcome most of the challenges and today, Martinez is Director of Hairkrone Salons in Madrid and the Finalist for Spanish Hairdresser of the Year 2020/2021 at the Fígaro Awards. He shares his journey. In International Stylist, celebrity hair artist Christian Ríos presents the Polaris collection, a mesmerising photo essay inspired by the colours of the Northern Lights. In Trend Alert, renowned hairstylists in India predict on-point chic hairstyles for the spring of 2021.

Since March 2020, India has been impacted by the deadly Coronavirus. The beauty industry was hit hardest because of the nature of work and resultantly, several salons and spas had to face closure. The segment which saw smooth sailing was online education, as now the academies used the various platforms as an opportunity to address more students and include more courses. We take a look at the different teaching and learning system.

They say about the month of February that there is everything to hope for and nothing to regret. The adage holds true for the time we were in and the time we are in now. The pandemic is slowly ebbing away and as the number of cases are going down in some cites, employees are coming back, and what’s more, even malls and shopping areas are seeing a higher footfall. We can only hope for the pandemic to go away and some semblance of normalcy to return in in our daily lives.

In In Focus, we highlight the important role of distributors in the industry. Selecting a product, researching the market research, understanding the manufacturing and distributor engagement model are just some of the responsibilities of a distributor. Hope springs eternal, and Salon International-India’s 12th Anniversary Special is all about a promising tomorrow. We began our journey with hope in our hearts and an unwavering determination to bring about a positive change in the mindsets of people. Back then, the beauty business was an unorganised cluster of parlours being run by wealthy owners who lacked skill and training. Those who were desirous of education travelled abroad as in India there were no beauty schools. Needless to say, learning was done on the job. Over time, however, the situation improved and with thearrival of international professional brands in the country there was some semblance of order. Cut to today and I have to say, the industry has come a long way! Within a decade the beauty and wellness industry has grown manifold and guess what – there is potential for stupendous growth still!

Or so we thought. 2020 came and we were struck by the deadly pandemic. The impact was so debilitating that several brands and establishments decided to wrap up their operations, while some decided to go slow. With this as a backdrop, the In Focus section has been created. We speak to stakeholders for their views on the status of the industry, their renewed marketing strategies and business recovery plans for FY21-22. As they say, hope floats.

The reality of working from home, social distancing and wearing masks may have impacted the salon industry, thegood news is that, stakeholders claim that footfalls in salons have come back to about 60 percent levels, for some even 90 percent.
The past 12 months have been unequivocally difficult for the beauty business, however only after extreme darkness can one see light at the end of the tunnel. Salon India believes that opportunity arises from every challenge and hence, we bring forth the positives from a disaster called Covid-19. With this as a backdrop unfolds our cover story which is on the positive outcomes that have emerged from Covid-19. On hindsight, if the pandemic hadn’t occured, would consumers have ever been so mindful of hygiene as they are today? Would the industry have ever thought of going online to retail some of their professional products? To be frank, I do not think so. Not in a million years. Therefore this progressive change is a welcome reliefcompared to how the industry was working pre-Covid-I9.

The March issue of 2020. We are already a quarter into the year, and it tells us just how fast time is û ying. I think, every day should be celebrated as one, and women made to feel special. Our cover story is on power women who have made a mark in the B & W industry of India.
