Fengshui is no mythical fairyland, says Way Fengshui Group CEO Mark Tan. MELAINNE CHIEW unravels the logic behind this age-old pseudoscience.
THE MAIN OFFICE of Way Fengshui Group is noticeably lavished with large paintings of frozen moments in spring: Cherry blossoms in the breeze, or stray petals on a running lake. These artworks, CEO Mark Tan points out, are by his father, fengshui Grand Master Tan Khoon Yong, who previously occupied the office.
That would explain the flaming red sofa and the pink walls — deliberate “fire” elements incorporated into the interior to energise the older man’s “water” element. “I know the office looks kind of old,” laughs Tan. He assures that a renovation is in the pipeline, with the new look to suit his own “metal” element, such as blue tones to cool his state of being.
Established in 1984, Way is one of Singapore’s largest consultancy firms. It also retails fengshui artefacts and books, including a yearly zodiac and forecast, as well as a detailed analysis of one’s luck cycle.
