Following the establishment of The Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) in 2014, it did not take them long to realise the enormously powerful mechanism franchising presents in promoting enterprise development and transformation in South Africa.
WHEN READING THE Vision and Mission Statements of the DSBD, one realizes how suitable franchising is in realising the strategic objectives defined by the ministry.
Enterprise development, as a transformation strategy envisaged by government, faces the challenge of how to maintain efficiencies, commercial competitiveness and compliance alongside transformation. How do you transform in terms of equity and managerial and trade skill while working towards a sustainable future?
By awarding SA Franchise Warehouse (SAFW) a tender to, over the next three years, develop and engineer 15 micro business systems to become franchise ready, the DSBD confirmed that they share our view that franchising holds the key to achieving transformation in business. In terms of the project, SAFW will prepare the businesses selected for participation to be able to offer business opportunities to aspirant business owners in a manner that is compliant with franchise best practice and related legislation. In order to ensure that the micro franchisors have access to the operational support and resources necessary to maintain their obligations to their future franchisees the project also includes a post-development incubation strategy.
This process has produced its first results and we are pleased to introduce the first eight business systems to have been selected for development.
FROM THE DESK OF MZI MEMANI
The DSBD plays an important role in promoting the creation and growth of small enterprises and has implemented a variety of programmes and projects to achieve this goal.

Marketing For Success
As much as selling is considered to be the lifeblood of any enterprise, marketing is without a doubt the heart pump that produces the income which transforms the business idea into a reality.
Franchisors, Franchisees & The CPA
The Consumer Protection Act (CPA) to a large extent codified our South African consumer-related common law and provided a Bill of Rights for consumers. As franchisees fall within the definition of a consumer, there are various key considerations which franchisors must be cognisant of when supplying goods to their franchisees.
Exclusivity Clauses in Lease Agreements
The contentious and longrunning issues around clauses in commercial leases granting a major tenant the exclusive right to carry on a particular type of business in a centre, and a corresponding clause in the lease of another tenant prohibiting them from carrying on the same type of business, appears to have a taken another step towards a conclusion.
Collaborate Grow
By seeing others as partners and not competitors, business owners can harness the power of the collective to attract customers, seek inspiration and help their overall bottom line. When it comes to building and growing a small business collaboration is the new competition.

Competitive Advantage for Franchises
Many organisations, including franchises, strive to attain a competitive advantage, but few truly understand what it is, how to achieve it and, perhaps most importantly, how to keep it.
