Maxine Schuiling discovered mindfulness when she was 18 and struggling with OCD and intrusive thoughts. She has since built a career of mentorship, helping others to overcome anxiety and overthinking by offering one-on-one coaching and classes. We spoke to Maxine about her work and the engaged online community she's created as a result.
Why are so many people struggling with anxiety these days?
Our lifestyles are not conducive to being low-stress or peaceful. We don't sleep or eat well, work too many hours, and don't have a healthy balance between movement, resting or socialising and alone time. All of these things fuel anxiety. There is also the rise of technology and social media: When we plug into technology we switch off from ourselves, and when we do that - we become prone to anxiety. Anxiety is really a warning signal trying to bring us back into the present moment.
A lot of people are not educated on how to deal effectively with anxiety. When people 'feed their anxiety, they are thinking thoughts and acting on behaviours that increase it in the long-term. Many of the things that provide short-term relief actually perpetuate the problem. They teach us to not be able to tolerate uncertainty, and that our safety lies in external reassurance.
