Around the World by SCOOTER AND SIDECAR
On October 21, 2017, I found myself rid ing off from London’s iconic Ace Cafe on a Honda SH300i scooter with sidecar. Beside me was my childhood pal, Reece Gilkes. Our destination was the exact spot we were departing from, as the plan was to be the first to ride around the world on a scooter and s idecar.
GAP YEAR ADVENTURES in the Age of CV19
Welcome to 2021, where it seems that masks are no longer just for Halloween. Few would dispute that 2020 was a year of major ups and downs. And, for many, the conditions sparked the question, “What am I doing with my life?”
Klim Badlands Pro Jacket and Pant
Many companies offer ADV gear, but when you whittle it down to RTW-expedition-grade quality, only a handful of brands stand up to the test.
YAMAHA TENERE 700
The wait is finally over. The Yamaha Ténéré 700 is probably one of the most anticipated bikes to come out of the Yamaha factory in quite some time. Yamaha teased us with what appeared to be a production-ready model three years ago and every model year came and went without show. We were starting to wonder if it would ever show up on the showroom floor. Well folks, the day is finally here, and it was worth the wait. The middle-weight class has been gaining a lot of attention over the last three years and is likely to be the most popular segment for years to come.

DESERT ODYSSEY
The security guard at the gate had a particular look on her face, one I’d become accustomed to over the previous month. I met her gaze with a big, cheesy grin. She looked confused. “What the hell are you doing out here mate, and where the hell have you been?”
Trails End Dual-Sport and Adventure Tail Bag
I’ve said it many times, I’ve never been a big fan of tank bags. However, they’re a creature comfort hard to resist once you’ve ridden with one that’s well designed.
Garmin zūmo XT
Garmin has long been the big fish in the pool of GPS, and their zumo line of products has graced motorcycle handlebars for years.
A REACH TOO FAR
This is not the story I thought I’d be writing when I began my motorcycling adventure on Namibia’s gravel roads.
3 KEYS TO HAVING A STUDENT MINDSET
We all do it. We get comfortable riding what and how we ride. Why bother stretching ourselves? Why try something different, more challenging, and unusual? Because having a student mindset focused on learning and growing will make you a safer rider. And, it’s downright fun!

THE MOST Surreal RIFE OF OUR LIVES
National Route 40 is not only the longest road in Argentina, but also the world. Parallel to the Andes, it crosses 11 provinces, connecting some of the most prominent places of natural beauty and cultural interest in the country. We’d planned to take our time and enjoy the seemingly endless points of interest in the southern part of RN40, but just before reaching the province of Mendoza, we realized that our visas would soon need renewing. The least complicated way to extend them was a “border run,” which meant a ride out of and back into the country from the nearest border crossing to obtain the passport stamps.
8 GREAT UPGRADES FOR THE YAMAHA WR250R
Yamaha’s WR250R has been one of the most capable small dual-sports on the market for more than 10 years. In January 2020 ADVMoto issue, we kitted one up for long-distance travel with a much larger tank, windscreen, luggage and engine mods. So, while we were in the mode, we decided to build a sportier version of the WR250R which would keep things simple but still provide some fun around home base, at a rally, or even be capable of a little racing. Subsequently, we located a used WR250R for $2,600 and got to work on the makeover.
Mosko Moto Reckless 80L (V3.0) Revolver
After completing a three-month, 10,000-mile off-road ride across western North America, I was convinced I’d found the ultimate luggage for hardcore adventure moto travel.
Gaerne SG-12 MX Boots
As I’d been happily wearing the hinged Gaerne SG-10 MX/off-road boot for many years, I bought a new pair for a 10,000-mile off-road marathon last summer.
BACKCOUNTRY DISCOVERY ROUTES MARATHON
It was late afternoon, high on a ridge in the Rockie s, and I must have come into signal range, as my phone lit up with a message. Stopped in the middle of the trail, it indicated that my youngest had tried calling. She wanted me to come home, as she was ill. Although concerned, I also felt relief that this would give me a valid reason to jump ship. Fo r several weeks I’d been riding nothing but gnarly trails day in and day out and had begun to question whether taking on one Backcountry Discovery Route after another was a good idea.

CAN WE TRAVELERS ADAPT IN THE TIME OF A PANDEMIC?
Being housebound in a small apartment in a random town during a pandemic with expired visas and a half-dead scooter in a country that until recently Wikipedia had under the category “Third World,” is not exactly the ideal situation. And it’s more than obvious that this part of our journey is not what we originally had in mind. However, this is how things are at the moment (April 2020) and no one knows how or when it’ll be over.

TOP 8 TIPS FOR FINISHING THE DAKAR RALLY AS A ROOKIE
This year I competed in and finished The Dakar Rally 2020. I set out to do the seemingly impossible encouraged by Nathan Rafferty, who raced and finished last year’s Dakar as a rookie with the same number (104). An enormous amount of time was spent training to start the race mentally and physically prepared. The race is incredibly challenging, with an estimated attrition rate of around 35% over the course of two weeks. This turned out to be a great year to race, as Americans won both the motorcycle and side-by-side classes for the first time in more than 40 years of the race’s history. I was fortunate to witness these enormous feats and, along the way, learned some important lessons to share with aspiring contenders.
