Experts from the field of admissions across different universities in America help break down how to land a job abroad post graduation.
Studying abroad isn’t hard to do. It’s landing a job there that is. With rising concerns over legal expenses, language and cultural barriers, uncertainty from employers, students are often left in a dilemma with regards to securing a steady job post graduation. Returning to India too isn’t often an option due to disparities in payscale and lack of options best suited for to match a foreign degree.
After observing the plight of such students, a few universities in the United States, have put systems in place to ensure their rising number of international students are well-placed post their graduation.
At the recently concluded International Career and College Counselling (IC3) Conference held in Mumbai, Youth Incorporated caught up with universities that are helping international students the opportunity to broaden their professional networks and engage in a number of activities that can diversify their resumes.
Explaining the visa process, Charlie Schwartz of the University of Cincinnati says that once a student has obtained the required F-1 visa, Optional Practical Training (OPT) and Curricular Practical Training (CPT) can be taken up to facilitate the process of later securing a H-1B visa. This paves the way for permanent residency and later citizenship.
Charlie also goes on to add, that universities, especially the University of Cincinnati are willing to do much work with hiring companies in order to help international students locate successful employment after graduation. They organize several career fairs every year which bring in prospective employers, including a unique fair exclusively for international students. “This international student career fair is helpful because we are focused on connecting employers who are comfortable with the sponsoring process to students who need sponsorship” he stated.
