It was back in 1999 when I first met Clinton Ang at his bustling restaurant and wine bar along Robertson Quay. No one could find anything on it from the internet today but back then, the 26-year-old had helped reimagine a more than 60 years old wine and spirits distribution business in the midst of an industry shakedown where principal labels have begun entering into our fast emerging market.
His gregarious smile and warm welcome make this a very pleasant weekly endeavour. That outlet may have gone but the same boyish grin remains broadly available to all who come into contact with the now veteran Managing Director of Hock Tong Bee Pte Ltd.
Age, it seems, agrees with Clinton, who has since married Tina, his beautiful wife and has a young princess between them named Cora. Life has been kind to this Christian businessman, but it has not always been easy.
As we swerve into his Tanjong Rhu residence in a chauffeured BMW 7 Series executive sedan, he was already raring to start what would be an eventful day at Sentosa Golf Club, of which he is also a member of.
Comfortably storing both our golf bags and Boston bags, we proceeded to enter the car. “Please, take the ‘boss’ seat,” I said, as I indicated for Clinton towards the rear left passenger seat.
As an option, the Executive Lounge, as that particular space is termed, offers the finest all round view and highest degree of comfort in the car. The seat features a massage function and various adjustment possibilities that make travelling extremely relaxing and comes with maximum leg room with a footrest for the optimum resting position.
“Let’s drop the sunroof,” said Clinton when he’s comfortably settled. “It looks like a fine day out there.” As we cruise along the highway towards Sentosa, we began our conversation in comfort and style.
