Fury At Soft Sentencing For Rapists

Rapists are being handed a “get out of jail free card” after almost 3,000 were given a sentence of six years or less since the Tories came to power, Labour warned.

The number jailed has halved since 2010, with 537 in 2020 compared to 1,058 10 years ago, analysis of Ministry of Justice figures shows.

And 36 were jailed for 12 months or less, according to the research.

Ministers are under pressure to do more to protect women after the rape and murder of 33-year-old Sarah Everard at the hands of police officer Wayne Couzens this March.
