The roots of these artistic crafts date back to around 2500 BC in the Indus valleys. Tons of perseverance and years of improvement of the artisans have finally paid back by giving Indian Handicrafts a sweet spot on the world's handicraft horizon.
A Tour Taking Through the Rich Odyssey of the Indian Handicrafts
India, the magnificent treasure trove of handicrafts, got its roots in the ancient times of the Harappa civilization almost 5000 years before. This was the first phase of the Indian handicraft sector. Traces of earthen pots, jewelry, paintings, sculptures and textiles were also found during the Vedic age. And the intrinsic carvings on temples and caves gave glimpses of those ancient times. The art of handicrafts advanced in the medieval phase when kings took a particular interest in crafts. The Guptas and the Mughals were important dynasties that gave a new shape to the handicraft industry. In the third phase, during the Britishers period, the industry suffered as the emergence of suppressing local crafts by Britishers began. Soon after India's independence, measures were undertaken to uplift the situation of the artisans and craftsmen of our country.
The Contributions of the Indian Handicraft to the World
Have you seen the mega-blockbuster Hollywood movie 'Beauty And The Beast'? The actress Emma Watson was seen wearing an intricate bodice where two artisans of Gujarat used Aari work on the dress. Other films like Harry Potter, the Games of Thrones, 300, Batman Begins, Rome and the Tudors brought the Indian handicrafts to the world's notice.
And the best part about India is that every state has its own handicraft specialty. Here are a few examples listed below.
