ASSEMBLE STAR BLOCKS
Measurements include ¼" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated by arrows on diagrams. If no direction is specified, press seam toward darker fabric.
1. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line on wrong side of each black print No. 1-2" square.
2. Align a marked black print square with one corner of a tan print No. 1-3½" square (Diagram 1; note orientation of marked line). Sew on marked line. Trim seam allowance to ¼". Press open attached triangle to make a corner unit. The unit still should be 3½" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 20 corner units total.
3. Sew together two purple print triangles, one tan print No. 1 triangle, and one black print No. 1 triangle in pairs (Diagram 2). Join pairs to make an hourglass unit. The unit should be 3/2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 20 hourglass units total.
4. Align marked black print squares with opposite corners of a purple print 3½" square (Diagram 3; note direction of marked lines). Sew on marked lines. Trim seam allowances to ¼". Press open attached triangles. Align marked black print squares with remaining corners of purple print square; stitch, trim, and press as before to make a Square-in-a-Square unit. The unit still should be 3½" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make five Square-in-aSquare units total.
