Common cough remedies withdrawn in allergy alert

TENS of thousands of cough medicines are being withdrawn from chemists due to the risk of deadly allergic reactions.

Day & Night Nurse, Covonia, Boots and Superdrug dry cough remedies containing pholcodine are being pulled off shelves "as a precaution".

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency acted after a review found a small risk of anaphylaxis if patients who had taken pholcodine later had a general anaesthetic.
